Initial Setting Time
The minutes between adding water to cement and the paste starting to stiffen, which limits how long concrete can be transported.
What is Initial Setting Time?
Initial setting time is the time from the moment water is mixed into dry cement until the paste starts to harden and lose its plasticity. Under Indian standards (IS codes), ordinary Portland cement must have an initial setting time of at least 30 minutes, which leaves time for mixing, transporting and placing.
Practical example
A transit mixer is stuck in heavy traffic in Mumbai for 2 hours. The concrete mix, which has no retarder, has an initial setting time of only 45 minutes, so it starts hardening in the spinning drum. The site engineer rejects the truck on arrival because the concrete has lost its workability.
In SuperWise
In SuperWise a concrete delivery is recorded as a material delivery challan against the PO line, with the unloading date, vehicle registration, photos and a quality status. An engineer who rejects a load sets the status to rejected and writes the reason in the quality remarks, and a rejected challan cannot be billed.
