Quarrying

The open-pit extraction of stone and other minerals, crushed into aggregate for concrete and road base.

What is Quarrying?

Quarrying is the extraction of raw construction materials, such as stone, from the earth's surface. Unlike deep-shaft mining for coal or gold, a quarry is generally an open pit. Drilling and controlled blasting break the bedrock into chunks, and crushers then reduce them to the aggregate sizes needed for concrete or road base.

Practical example

A highway project needs 5 million tons of gravel for the road sub-base. The contractor leases a rocky hill nearby and sets up a captive quarry. The crew blasts the rock face daily and passes the boulders through jaw crushers to make the 40 mm and 20 mm aggregates the highway needs.

In SuperWise

Aggregate from a quarry is a material resource in SuperWise, bought on a purchase order. Each truck that arrives is recorded as a material delivery challan against the PO line, with the supplier's challan number, vehicle registration, driver, quantity and photos. Deliveries cannot take the total past the maximum quantity on the PO line.
