Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
Test methods that assess the strength and soundness of concrete or steel without cutting or damaging the structure.
What is Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)?
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) covers test methods such as the rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and ground penetrating radar, which structural auditors use to assess the hidden condition of hardened concrete or steel welds without drilling cores or breaking the structure apart.
Practical example
A consultant suspects that the concrete poured in a main column a month ago did not reach its target M40 strength. Rather than drill a core out of the load-bearing column, the consultant runs an Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test. The instrument sends sound waves through the concrete, and the wave speed shows hidden honeycombing and confirms the concrete is too weak.
In SuperWise
SuperWise logs a failed NDT result as an issue linked to a schedule node or WBS task and to the responsible contractor, with photos and evidence attached. An issue has a priority, a target closure date and a resolve and close step. A penalty or debit against the vendor can be raised through the vendor ledger.
