Extension of Time (EoT)
A contract change that moves the completion date later when a delay is not the contractor's fault, so no delay penalty applies.
What is Extension of Time (EoT)?
An Extension of Time (EoT) is a formal change to a construction contract that moves the completion date later. A contractor applies for one when a delay is not its fault, such as late design drawings from the client, an unusually severe monsoon or a national strike. A granted EoT protects the contractor from paying liquidated damages (penalty fines).
Practical example
A contractor is due to finish a bridge in December. In July, a supplier strike causes a severe cement shortage across the state for 30 days. The contractor submits an EoT claim backed by news reports and site logs. The client approves it and moves the deadline to late January, with no delay penalties.
In SuperWise
SuperWise logs a delay as an issue against the affected task, with an issue type such as material shortage, a description, photos and the date it was opened. The daily progress report (DPR) lists the issues opened or updated on its date and can add weather conditions. Each DPR exports as PDF or XLS, which gives a contractor dated records to attach to an EoT application.
