A very stiff, dry concrete mix with no flow, compacted by heavy rollers rather than poured, used for dams and highway bases.

## What is Zero Slump Concrete?

Zero Slump Concrete is an ultra-stiff mix with a very low water-to-cement ratio. Standard fluid concrete slumps when tested in a cone, but this mix holds its dense shape, a slump of zero. It cannot be poured into columns. It is dumped on the ground and compacted by heavy vibratory rollers, which makes it suitable for highway sub-bases and large gravity dams.

## Practical example

To build a dam across a river, engineers reject conventional fluid concrete, which would need costly [formwork](https://superwise.site/glossary/formwork/) and years to pour. They specify roller compacted concrete with a zero slump mix instead. Dumpers drop the stiff, dry concrete continuously, and heavy rollers drive over it at once to compact it into a solid wall at high speed.
