## What is Quick Setting Cement?

Quick Setting Cement is a variant of Portland cement made to harden fast. It contains less gypsum, which normally slows setting, plus chemical accelerators such as aluminium sulphate, so it reaches initial set in as little as 5 minutes and final set in 30 minutes, against the hours that normal [OPC](https://superwise.site/glossary/ordinary-portland-cement/) needs.

## Practical example

During construction of a deep basement, the contractor hits an underground aquifer, and water pours through a crack in the retaining wall. Standard cement would wash away. The team mixes a small batch of quick setting cement and plugs the hole. It hardens into solid, waterproof rock in about 5 minutes and stops the leak.
