# QA/QC in Construction Explained

The process checks set before work starts (QA) and the tests made during execution (QC) that keep a project to specification.

## What is Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)?

Quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) are two separate parts of keeping a project to its specification. QA is the process framework set before work begins, such as ISO standard checklists and the [IS](https://superwise.site/glossary/indian-standard-codes/) codes specified for concrete. QC is the physical testing during execution, such as a slump test on fresh concrete or an inspection of welds, which catches defects while they can still be fixed.

## Practical example

Under the QA process, no concrete may be poured without an approved checklist. When the [site engineer](https://superwise.site/glossary/site-engineer/) tests the slump on site and rejects a watery batch by sending it back to the supplier, that is QC. Together the two checks keep the structure to its design strength.
