A layer of large angular stones packed over compacted earth to give floor slabs and pavements a firm sub-base.

## What is Hardcore Soling?

Hardcore soling, or simply soling, is a sub-base layer of large angular stones, usually 150 mm to 230 mm in size, packed tightly over compacted earth before a ground floor slab (PCC) or a pavement is laid. It spreads loads and gives a firm, non-yielding base.

## Practical example

Before casting the concrete floor of a warehouse, the contractor lays a 200 mm layer of stone soling over the excavated soil. The stones are hand-packed tightly, the gaps are filled with smaller stone dust (murrum), and a heavy roller compacts the layer so the floor does not crack under forklift traffic.

## In SuperWise

SuperWise tracks soling as its own [BOQ](https://superwise.site/glossary/bill-of-quantities/) item, measured in sq.m or cu.m. The engineer records the measured area or volume in a measurement sheet against that item and the [work order](https://superwise.site/glossary/work-order/). The approved quantity feeds the [RA bill](https://superwise.site/glossary/running-account-bill/) raised for the earthwork contractor, and the cumulative billed quantity cannot pass the work order quantity.
